A firewall is a network security device that controls traffic between one network and the next.  The most common installation is between a company internal network (a.k.a. intranet) and the internet.

The firewall provides protection against internet based attacks, such as denial of service attacks.  The firewall also enables you to allow or deny specific types in IP traffic. Additionally, many firewalls provide some means of secure remote access to the protected network.
